چکیده

In this paper a client-server system design and implementation for interactive multimedia documents is presented. The server provides the document scenaria, while the media objects reside in any http server. The client retrieves the scenario from the server and requests the appropriate media from the corresponding http servers. The client design covers widely the issue of interaction with external and internal entities in terms of simple and complex events. Moreover it maintains the high-level spatial and temporal synchronization requirements of the application. The whole framework has been implemented in Java using the RMI (Remote Method Invocation) client server communication protocol and the JMF (Java Media Framework) for handling multimedia objects. The system presents a promising approach for distributed interactive multimedia on the Internet and Intranets.

WWW-enabled delivery of interactive multimedia documents

The structure and delivery of Interactive Multimedia Documents (IMDs) has been an issue of intensive research in the last years. In this paper we propose a scenario based structure for IMDS and a mechanism for WWW-enabled delivery of such IMDs. The structure for the IMDs, based on the concept of scenarios, which define the flow of the presentation and the possible user interactions with the IMD...

From CD-ROM to Web-Served: Reverse Engineering of an Interactive Multimedia Course

The Web offers advantages for Learning Technologies, but the interactivity necessary for the learner requires technical features that are currently hardly supported. In the paper, we briefly describe how a traditional Multimedia Course, usually marketed as off-line CD-ROMs, has been reverse engineered to a server-based, multi-client Web application in order to have an identical behaviour at the...

Developing dynamic web based educational content

In this paper, we address the problem of using common web based client/server technologies to build up education portals. Within the client/server scope we will consider existing online education systems and their lack of interactivity. Usage of various Java based technologies like multimedia authoring with JMF (Java Media Framework), online agents and search with XML (eXtensible Markup Languag...

Impact of Interactive Multimedia on Client-Server Performance

This work describes a simulation study of client-server architectures, and a UNIX-based le system with multimedia extensions. An interactive multime-dia workload is used to compare the throughput and scalability of the traditional and a new hybrid client-server architecture. Simulation results indicate that the hybrid client-server, combined with the multime-dia le system, is a promising distri...

A Java Application Programming Interface to a Multimedia Enhanced Object-Oriented DBMS

Advanced multimedia applications call for integrated DBMS support, i.e., the integrated modeling, management, and interactive presentation of persistent multimedia documents. Generic services for the presentation of multimedia documents have to be available at the database clients. This includes continuous data delivery, realization of presentation layout, synchronization enforcement, and an e ...
